Our Destiny – How to Navigate Around It?

Our Destiny and “The Matrix”

“The Matrix” is definitely one of my favorite trilogies. Not so much because of the action scenes or special effects, but because of the philosophical meaning embedded in the film. The central issue at the heart of the plot is whether we have the ability to make our own choices or if our lives are determined by fate. At the beginning of the film, one of the main characters – Morpheus – asks the other key character – Neo: “Do you believe in fate?” to which Neo replies, “No, because I don’t like the idea of not being responsible for my own life.” Later in the film, it becomes clear that Neo’s fate has long been predetermined, meaning that no matter what he chooses, the outcome is already set.

However, since the world in the Matrix is created by machines,

they do not understand the concept of free will inherent in humans. When, in the final battle between Agent Smith and Neo, the agent asks Neo why he continues to fight, even though it’s clear he will lose and that human life is meaningless, Neo stands up and replies, “Because I choose to.”

This is definitely my favorite moment from the trilogy because despite the suffering, meaninglessness, and difficulties we face, we have one thing that is our strength – choice. Unfortunately, most of us are used to the idea that we don’t have control over our lives. It’s easy to blame the Universe, God, or Life for our misfortunes, but the truth is that everything in our lives is a product of our decisions.

Some might say this isn’t true,

that life is unfair, that it punishes some and not others, and that people with difficult lives don’t choose their fate. The truth is, they actually do. We are beings with an exceptionally strong mind and intuition that help us attract what we want. Again, some might ask, “But who wants to be unhappy?” Many people want to be unhappy because being happy means taking responsibility – stepping out of the comfort zone, looking inward, and most importantly, making difficult decisions. At such a moment, you realize that no one else can give you happiness, nor can anyone else take it away from you, except for yourself, which can be difficult for some because there’s no one to blame for their failures.

Our Destiny

There is a theory that the soul chooses its path, parents, and the people it will meet even before being born on Earth. However, this does not mean that we have no control over ourselves throughout our lives. As difficult as it may be to accept, we are the ones who shape our fate. We are the ones who make choices every day. There are no right or wrong choices, but there are ones that bring us satisfaction and those that do not make us feel good.

The question is what kind of life we want to have. Many people choose the role of victim (our destiny), making choices that do not satisfy them because they are afraid to follow their own path, and in the end, they blame others for their own choices. Everyone has the right to live this way, but it is a boring, superficial, and gloomy life.

There is another option for our destiny

– to choose yourself, even if this might not be appreciated by others, and live a fulfilling life. In a world where we are taught to follow certain behavioral patterns rather than our intuition, it’s difficult to be yourself. It’s hard to step out of the “Matrix,” but it’s worth it, and everyone has the free choice to do so.

If you still find it hard to understand how you can actually follow yourself, the first step, in my opinion, is to enrich yourself – read books, become more interested in yourself, find practices that will help you rediscover yourself, and then act towards what feels right for you inside. It’s not always easy. As I said, taking responsibility for your life means letting go of the hard roads of our destiny, many old views, patterns, and beliefs. But if we decide to grow and build a fulfilling life, the path includes uncomfortable situations. However, when you remind yourself why you are doing it, it is definitely worth it.
